Vacuum Rolls and Suction Rolls
A vacuum roll holds the web against the shell by drawing air through the shell, which is how the sheet is transferred at open draws and dewatered in the press section.

Vacuum Roll — common questions
Drilled or grooved shell?
Drilled shells for dewatering duty in the press section; grooved shells where you need to carry the web without marking it. Some positions use both.
What wears out first?
The suction box seals and the shell cover. Seals are a consumable; a worn shell shows up as uneven vacuum across the width.
